John Darnielle is a master of mood. To read him is to immerse yourself in his nebulous, quiet world of slowly building dread. Ostensibly, this book is about a true crime writer's new project- writing the tale of an unsolved double murder rife with Satanic overtones whilst living in the property in which it occurred. Dark as that may sound, that's the least of the darkness to be found here. What this novel truly is has nothing to do with salacious details or shock value. It's a slow reveal of a character's path to decency and the answer to the question, "How true should true crime be?". Darnielle's novel won't shock, but its subtle devastation will sneak up on you.
