This book is the 8th in a series of practical guides to travel and recreation in the scenic Colorado Plateau region of the Four Corners States.

This book covers two distinct areas. One area, which lies to the south and west of Moab, is called the "Canyon Rims Area" for the purposes of this book. It is defined by U.S. 191 on the east, the Colorado River on the west and Utah 211 and lower Indian Creek Canyon on the south. This area includes all of the Bureau of Land Management's "Canyon Rims Recreation Area."

The second area is still farther south of Moab and is called the "Needles Area" for the purposes of this book. It is defined by Utah 211 and lower Indian Creek Canyon on the north, the Colorado River on the west, and northeasternboundary of the Dark Canyon Primitive Area and the Abajo Mountains on the south, and U.S. 191 on the east. This area includes all of the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.
