About

We are a little independent bookstore with a big selection of books. The name of the store was drawn from one of Edward Abbey's most well-known fiction titles, The Monkey Wrench Gang. His character Seldom Seen Smith was an outfitter, and the name of his company--and hideout--was "Back of Beyond." We specialize in natural history, environmental literature, southwestern guidebooks & maps, Native American books, and Western history. But we also carry a wild assortment of science, philosophy, current affairs, rare books, and generally other cool stuff you won't find elsewhere.

Planning to tour Moab and you want a guidebook written by a local author? We have lots to choose from. Looking for a mystery set in the Southwest? No problem; we have plenty. Want to read up on issues such as land use, mining, and water conservation? We have your book. Thinking of growing a water-wise garden? Our gardening selection ranges from books about square-foot gardening, xeriscaping, and companion planting to methods of organic gardening and even composting.

Now you can find your favorite genres, all in one location!

During spring of 2011, the former Arches Book Company was combined with Back of Beyond Bookstore. You can now shop for fiction titles and mainstream national bestsellers right here in Back of Beyond. Other sections such as Health, Cooking, Young Adult, Juvenile, Poetry, Mystery, Sci-Fi and Western Fiction have also been integrated.

If our online store doesn't have what you're looking for and you won't be in the Moab area for a while, drop us a line and we will ship your book the same day if it's available.

We also offer direct to home shipping of books, audio books on CD or download and e-books at a 20% discount by clicking on THIS LINK.

Rare Books

We are constantly adding to our collection of rare books. Our store boasts three rare bookcases—one devoted to Edward Abbey's titles, one with general rare books, and one with a varying motif, such as works set in Moab or those with a uranium theme. Most of our rare books are first editions, and many are signed. You can shop online or come into the store to browse.
